Haysboro Pre-school

Haysboro Preschool is a parent run program for three and four year olds. Our room is bright and cheerful, while our teachers are university trained (B.Ed), experienced and loving. We believe in an open environment where children choose from a variety of learning centers, including dramatic play, building, art puppets, and science/nature. Through these, as well as circle time, stories and outdoor play, children can grow and learn at their own pace. There is a maximum of 12 children per class.

Quality, Affordable Preschool
We provide a safe learning environment for three and four year olds to practice appropriate social, emotional, physical and intellectual skills through center-play, sharing time, stories, songs and music, games, outdoor play, art and crafts, and snacks. Children participate in a variety of open-ended learning centers that allow for individual development.

Social skills such as getting along, sharing and taking turns are met by circle time, snack and playtime. Emotional skills such as expressing feelings and talking about how we feel are an ongoing process. Emotional responses are stimulated by a variety of experiences. Gross physical skills are practiced during gym times and outdoor play. Fine motor skills are used at craft tmes and at building and manipulative centers. Intellectual skills such as recognizing their name in print, counting, colours, shapes and vocabulary are focused on during circle time and at centers.

Basic activity centers include dramatic play/housekeeping, books/library, building center, art, small manipulative toys, sand/water, puzzles. Supplementary centers include gross motor, puppet area, and science/nature.

We have an open environment, set up to accommodate the above mentioned centers. Children are allowed to choose freely between activity centers.

Qualified Teachers, B.Ed.

Lorraine Rohs, B.ED., Early Childhood Services Diploma
Lorraine was introduced to our preschool as a substitute teacher for Jane Turk, in the spring of 2005. Lorraine was invited to join the preschool as a permanent teacher in September 2005. Lorraine attended the University of Calgary and graduated with a Bachelor or Education in 1985. Her majors were reading and language, as well as early childhood education. Lorraine taught kindergarten in Rocky Mountain House for two years, then moved to Calgary and continued to teach kindergarten for another three years. After having a family, Lorraine chose to be a stay-at-home parent to her three children. She continued her interest in teaching through volunteering in schools and teaching at her church. She is pleased to be teaching at such an open and family centered program as the Haysboro Community Preschool. Lorraine also volunteers at Ten Thousand Villages, a non-profit store for third-world countries. She also loves to quilt, as well as go hiking and camping.

Jane Turk, B.Ed.
Jane has been with the Haysboro Community Preschool since it opened its doors in 1999. Jane received her Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba. She taught physical education and grades 1 and 2 for St. James school division in Winnipeg for five years. Upon moving to Calgary, in 1987, Jane taught for the Calgary Board of education for an additional give years. She then made the decision to stay home with her two children. Two years later Jane began a preschool out of her home for 3 and 4 year olds. Her home preschool ran for 5 years. Jane was asked by the community association to help organize the Haysboro Community Preschool for its opening in September 1999. She joined our program at this point. Jane has also been an active volunteer at the Haysboro Elementary School, helped coach Southfour soccer and hockey, as well as run preschool dance classes at the South YMCA.
