The Haysboro Community Association Board is aware of concerns arising in the community with an increased homeless population sleeping rough in certain areas.
There are also concerns regarding trash and debris left behind in the shrubs and bushes.
The HCA has discussed the issues with the Ward 11 councillor's office and with Calgary Police officers assigned to Haysboro.
Councillor Penner's office has requested the Urban Forestry department to begin tree-trimming in specific areas to increase visibility and limit congregating spaces.
This pertains to the brush nearest the natural playground near the community hall.
This course of action makes the location less inviting for encampments and has been successful in other communities.
Additionally, The CPS Community Resource Officer has informed the board that they have been patrolling through the area more frequently in the month of September in response to the concerns raised.
If concerns of social disorder are noticed, these are the steps to take:
Concern for safety/criminal behaviour should be directed to 911. Always call 911 when someone's health or safety is at risk, and in in emergency situations.
Call 311 for City non-emergency and non-law enforcement related services (e.g. bylaw-related issues, potholes, street cleaning etc.)
211 is provincial support line to help with concerns regarding mental health and poverty.
As well, the Alpha House runs a number of applicable response programs in Calgary.
The Downtown Outreach Addictions Partnership (DOAP) team mobile number is (403) 998-7388, encampment concerns can be reached (403) 805-7388 and for needle concerns contact (403) 796-5334.
Please continue to report issues and concerns and we will continue to collaborate with community partners to ensure Haysboro remains a safe community.
For the safety of all, please refrain from taking any direct actions. We appreciate the community's concerns and appropriate measures are being taken to address the situation.
